Legislative Update June 6, 2007.

The smoke has cleared, the lights are out, and the legislators have left Carson City for another 2 years. It's official! The 74th Legislative Session is History. Congratulation CTE !!! Thanks to the hard work of countless supporters, CTE will benefit to the tune of 8 million dollars over the next 2 years. $4 million each year of the biennium. There is an additional $120,000 that is allocated for the 6 CTSO's. These funds will be used to establish new programs as well as support and maintain existing programs. You will be hearing more about these funds in the coming months. I hope to see all of you at the Summer Conference at Lake Tahoe in July. Thanks for your support.

Legislative Update May 23,2007.

As the Legislative Session approaches it's final week we as CTE instructors need to let our voices be heard. Several issues are driving the agenda in the halls of the Legislature. The Empowerment/ All day Kindergarden debate has slowed the procces to a crawl. This coupled with an Economic Forum forcast that was less than projected, has set into motion a scenerio that few are able to second guess. Closed door meetings with key players continue with the Education Budget. Priorities change from day to day. Our plan requires your participation. We are asking you to send positive E-mails in support of funding CTE programs for the Biennium. Items to include are: CTE programs produce positive results for students and bussiness, CTE instruction makes education relevant and meaningful, CTE programs are more expensive to operate than traditional classes, CTE programs meet the needs of the 80% of students who will not pursue a postsecondary 4 year degree. CTE keeps students in school and increases the graduation rate.
We need to E-mail the Assembly and Senate Leadership, both Democrats as well as Republicans and make our message ring true. NACTE has developed a very positive image in the Legislature during this session with your help. Let us continue this positive image and promote a higher level of awareness as we head into the final sprint of this legislative session. Your voice can and will make a difference. Please take the time to contact these legislators your efferts will help. CTE is the best kept secret in Education. It's time to let the Secret out!!! Thank you for your hard work .

Legislative Update April 13, 2007.

The legislature has reached the deadline for bills to be introduced. We have several bills which have met the deadlines. Several meetings have taken place with key legislators to formulate a stratagy for the remaining weeks of the session. Our bills are on hold because of the deadlines mentioned earlier as well as the money committees responsibility to close and fund the DSA(Distributive School Account) first. The Economic Forum is scheduled for May 1st. After this Forum meets they project the revenue stream for the next 2 years. This will allow the Money committees to finalize budgets. If the economic report shows favorable indicators additional funds become available for our bills. Discussions regarding CTE are extremely positive. We are very optimistic that additional funding for CTE will occur. We just need to be patient and let the process work.

The hearings for AB131 and AB151 before Assembly Ways and Means went very well. Represenatives from the Dept of Education, NACTE, Business and Industry, as well as School Districts testified in favor of these bills. All testimony supported both bills. The committee has not taken action on this bill as of this morning. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed the members of the committee as well as those who testified. ACR 6 will be heard this afternoon in the Assembly Education Committee.

Good News!
Assembly Bills 131 and 151 have passed from the Assembly Education Committee and were, on February 28th, referred to the Assembly Ways and Means committee.
